Each time a bowler knocks down a pin, he is given one point. If he should knock down all ten pins in his first throw, that is called a strike. It is shown as an X on the score sheet and scores 10 points, since ten pins have been knocked down. A bonus number of points is also given for a strike, and what this is depends on what the score is for the next two strikes. Whatever the score is, it is added up and given as a bonus. That means of course, that those points are actually counted twice; once for the bonus and once again for the score of that frame.
If the bowler plays a strike in his tenth frame, then he must be given two extra balls to allow the bonus points to be awarded. Should these two plays be strikes he is then awarded 30 points.
If three strikes are bowled one after the other, it is referred to as a turkey. If a perfect score ( 12 strikes in a row ) is played - which is extremely rare - it is called a Thanksgiving Turkey.
Since two balls are allowed for each frame, the bowler often has a good chance of knocking down all ten pins with two throws. If he does this it is called a ‘spare’.
