When most people think of Bowling Games, what comes to mind is usually basic information that's not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there's a lot more to Bowling Games than just the basics.

Nine pin bowling is played similarly to ten pin bowling in that there is a lane or series of lanes, down which is bowled a ball in an attempt to knock pins over, but there are only nine pins instead of the usual ten. Classic, Schere and Bohle are the three types of games played with ninepins.

The game of rolling a ball at skittles or pins is believed to have been in existence right from ancient days, but it was called by many different names, and there were a varying number of pins used in each. The original game of ninepins was first played in Germany on a clay bed. A little later, a wide board was laid over the clay and the bowl was rolled along this.

Skittles as we know it today probably started in England in about the 13th century, but did not come to the US until about the middle of the nineteenth century. Dutch settlers introduced it and at first it was played outdoors on a green.

But it moved indoors and became so popular that in New York City, almost every block on Broadway from Fulton to 14th Street had lanes. The trouble was that gamblers and underworld figures so frequently bet on the outcomes of the games that it was brought into disrepute.

In fact, owning a ninepin bowling alley was banned in 1841 by the state of Connecticut. To get around this, gamblers simply added another pin and called the game ten pin bowling. The game then became even more popular, but the gambling part seems to have vanished.

These days, ninepin bowling continues to be played in Britain and Europe, but not much in the US, where tenpin is the game of choice.

Ninepins, mostly known as skittles in the UK and Europe, is still played there especially in pubs because the lanes don’t have to be as long as for tenpin bowling. The German game of ninepins is called kegel.

For skittles, the pitch varies according to region between 11 and 21 feet long. The ball is often made of a hard wood, mostly lignum vitae, but it can be rubber. Three balls are usually thrown or rolled with players getting up to 12 turns per match.

In some variations the front pin must be knocked down before any other pin can be counted, even if they are knocked over. Another variation is called Nomination and the player has to nominate a pin which will be the first knocked down.
