Timing Guide

Timing Guide

Do you ever feel like you know just enough about Bowling Games to be dangerous? Let's see if we can fill in some of the gaps with the latest info from Bowling Games experts.

Timing is of the essence when you are playing bowls. If your timing is out of sync then the ball will lose momentum, the delivery will feel hard, your footwork will probably feel awkward and you very likely won’t score a hit at all. You may even strain muscles that should never feel the slightest pinch.

It is imperative to practice timing. That is, timing your steps with your swing. The first step should see the downswing of the ball, the second and third steps should see the back swing completed and the forward swing well into completion, while the fourth step - the slide - should see the beginning of delivery.

The point of release is when the ball is traveling at its fastest, which will usually be between 17 - 19 mph. Some are faster and some slower, of course. Once the ball hits the lane it will lose up to 3mph or more of its speed due to the friction of the lane. Much depends on how much oil is on the lane; if it’s a bit dry, then friction is greater, while a freshly oiled lane will cause less.

Use a stopwatch to time the ball from the moment of release to when it strikes the pins, then you can calculate the speed.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

Lanes are 60 feet or 18. 3 meters long. You will need to divide the distance by the time. If you feel the ball was traveling much too slowly - less than 17 mph, then you need to work on your timing.

If you reach the foul line before the ball is in the proper position to be delivered - referred to as early delivery - then this will slow down its speed. You will need to practice the timing of your start and your approach to coordinate it better. Newcomers tend to hold the ball for too long also, which ruins the timing of delivery.

If the ball reaches the foul line - in your hand - before you get there, then its impact will be spoiled as you won’t be able to deliver it properly. Your body will not be in the correct position for maximum impact. You will be out of balance in either position and unable to direct the full force of leverage onto the ball for maximum energy or ‘revs’.

Experts in bowling have recommended that the back maintain an angle of 15 degrees from start to finish for the best effect. However, much depends on the height of the bowler. Some pros have won many tournaments while their backs were nowhere near that angle.

If you've picked some pointers about Bowling Games that you can put into action, then by all means, do so. You won't really be able to gain any benefits from your new knowledge if you don't use it.
